Apprenticeships

Apprentice success stories – Jamie Goodhall

It’s time to celebrate another inspirational apprentice success story at Penshaw View. This time, we caught up with Jamie Goodhall, a WHS Technician at Amazon to reflect on his journey through the Safety, Health and Environmental Technician: Level 3 apprenticeship.

Jamie came to the programme as a natural next step in his career, bringing with him a clear appetite to develop his technical knowledge while making a real impact in the workplace.

Throughout the apprenticeship, he balanced the demands of a fast-paced safety role with structured learning, applying new skills directly to real-world challenges. From audits and inspections to first aid responses and improvement projects, Jamie embraced the variety that comes with working in safety, health and environmental practice.

Now, having successfully completed his apprenticeship and strengthened his future career prospects, Jamie shares his experience and advice for anyone considering taking a similar path.

Q) What lead you to starting your chosen apprenticeship?

Natural progression from proxy position.

Q) What does a typical day look like for you?

There is no real “typical day”. Every day is different from the next with Safety. We can have audits and inspections to do as well as dealing with first aid calls and any other events that occur throughout the day.

Q) How would you describe the apprenticeship journey to anyone thinking of starting?

Do it. It’s one of the best experiences going. You are learning the position whilst actually doing the position. In my opinion, it’s the best way to learn.

Q) What advice would you give to someone starting an apprenticeship?

Network, network, and network. Ask questions and talk to everyone and anyone.

Q) How did your manager and trainer support you whilst on programme?

My manager has supported me to no end, always pushing me to go that extra step and find out more.

Q) What can you tell us about your end point assessment?

For my EPA I did a project on spill kits at my site and how we have a variety on site and the fact that, if we standardised what they looked like, we would have fewer occurrences of spill kit misuse.

Q) Was there a highlight to your apprenticeship?

Attending the regional safety conference with all the safety managers from the EU21 region and being able to network with them all.

Q) Did you find anything difficult?

No, if there was anything I could reach out to my tutor or speak with my colleagues to get advice.

Q) Do you feel the apprenticeship has helped your future aspirations and do you have any plans for your career or further development?

For now, I am looking to spend the next year gaining more accreditations and learning the ins and outs of the role before looking at career progression.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Jamie for taking the time to share his journey with us. His experience perfectly highlights the value of apprenticeships that combine hands-on responsibility with structured learning and dedicated support.

Jamie’s proactive approach, commitment to continuous improvement, and willingness to network and ask questions have clearly played a key role in his success. From delivering a practical end point assessment project to building strong professional relationships at regional safety events, he has made the most of every opportunity available to him.

We truly believe that apprenticeships open doors to rewarding, sustainable, and fulfilling careers. Jamie is a fantastic example of how determination, curiosity, and the right training can create a strong foundation for long-term professional growth.

If you’ve been considering an apprenticeship to support your own development, why not explore the range of courses we currently have available? Alternatively, if you’re an employer or learner with questions, our team would be happy to help – just get in touch to start the conversation.
