In this blog post, we’re celebrating the impressive achievements of one of our recent learners, Shaun Bateman, who has recently completed his course with flying colours.
Having completed our Level 3 Team Leader course with a Distinction, Shaun could consolidate the skills he already had and pick up some essential new ones. Read on to find out more about Shaun’s inspiring apprenticeship journey.
Q) What is your name and current role?
My name is Shaun Bateman and my current role is a Team Leader at Station Taxis.
Q) What led you to start your chosen apprenticeship?
I wanted to complete this apprenticeship for my personal continuing professional development (CPD) as I have never completed further education. I also wanted the chance to achieve my maths and English at L2 as I didn’t achieve these at GCSEs so this was really important for me.
Q) What does a typical day look like for you?
My daily role includes tasks such as looking at the staff’s daily duties; this can include completing the staff rotas and staff holidays. Day-to-day I must put planning in place for work activities and deal with any work issues and conflict.
Q) How would you describe the apprenticeship journey to anyone thinking of starting?
Enrolling in an apprenticeship is a great route to go down and I liked the way that it was all completed within my workplace.
Q) What advice would you give to someone starting an apprenticeship?
I would say stick to it as it’s worth it once all of the hard work is complete and you receive your qualification.
Q) How did your manager and trainer support you whilst on the programme?
My manager Jeff supported me well; he was great and made time for me throughout the apprenticeship.
Q) What was the highlight of your apprenticeship?
I would say gaining my Functional Skills in maths and English as part of the programme was the highlight of the course for me.
Q) Do you feel the apprenticeship has helped your future aspirations and do you have any plans for your career or further development?
The apprenticeship has supported me in my development by gaining promotion to Team Leader. I am currently happy in this role and would like to take the opportunity to develop further at Station Taxis.
Angela Mcglade, Shaun’s tutor, had this to say when asked about his successful completion of the apprenticeship:
“That’s a great result, I’m absolutely over the moon for Shaun. The Distinction stands as a testament not only to the hard work he’s put in but also to dedication and patience.”
Summarising his apprenticeship journey, Shaun said the following:
I was really happy with my tutor as she was very supportive and available when I needed her, which included outside of her normal working hours.
I enjoyed the apprenticeship and have now applied the knowledge and skills I have learned within my management role. From this course, I have developed myself and this has been supported in my internal performance reviews. I started as an Operator and, through the completion of this apprenticeship, I have progressed to a Team Leader.
The work that was set by my trainer was sufficient and challenging enough. Not only was my trainer supportive throughout but, the Penshaw View team was supportive when I needed to go on a Break in Learning (BIL), and a plan was put in place for my return to get me back on track.
This course has helped me manage my staff more effectively. I have the knowledge and skills now to complete a high-performance plan which will support my team in their personal development.
The main thing I will take away from this apprenticeship is being more confident and having more of an understanding of different types of learning styles and how to bring the best out of the staff. My overall experience of the course was very good and I would recommend Penshaw View to others wanting to complete an apprenticeship.
Apprentice success story
Shaun’s success is a testament to just how far a learner can come with determination and the right network of people supporting them. His renewed confidence and ability to effectively manage his staff demonstrates what can be achieved with the right mindset toward professional development.
We congratulate Shaun on his apprenticeship completion and would like to thank our dedicated training staff for expertly guiding him to success.
