Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship success story – Dylan Mustard

In this article, we’re celebrating Dylan Mustard, who recently achieved a Distinction in his Level 2 Supply Chain Warehouse Operative apprenticeship.

Dylan began his apprenticeship with a different provider, but partway through his programme, they unexpectedly closed, leaving him without access to any of his previous work. Despite this setback, Dylan remained focused and determined to succeed.

Thanks to our partnership with Vantec and the North East Automotive Alliance, he was able to transfer to us to continue his training. With the support of his new trainer and employer, Dylan not only caught up on lost time but completed his apprenticeship within the expected timeframe, achieving the highest possible grade.

We work closely with employers across the North East Automotive Alliance network to deliver flexible, high-quality apprenticeships that adapt to the needs of both learners and businesses.

Dylan’s journey is a testament to what strong partnerships and learner support can achieve. We spoke to Dylan and he shared what a typical day looks like for him and answered some questions about his apprenticeship journey:

“Once I clock in, my day begins with the start of shift briefing led by our Operations Management Team. This is where we get updates on the day’s priorities, any safety notices and a general overview of what’s expected. It’s a good way to get focused and make sure everyone’s on the same page.

“After the briefing, I carry out a full pre-shift check on the Forklift Truck (FLT) I’ll be using. Safety and compliance are top priorities, so I make sure everything is in proper working order. Once I’ve completed the inspection, the Supervision countersigns it to confirm it’s been done thoroughly.

“With the FLT ready, I log into the Warehouse Control System (WCS) and grab my scanner. Using these tools, I pick the parts needed for customer orders. Accuracy is key here—not just in picking the right items, but also in making sure they’re delivered in the correct sequence and on time. We follow a Just-In-Time (JIT) delivery model, so timing and order are everything.

“Once picked, I transport the parts to the dispatch area, where they’re prepared for delivery. It’s satisfying knowing that what I do helps keep things moving smoothly and ensures customers get what they need, when they need it.”

Q) What led you to start your chosen apprenticeship?

In order to develop and grow within my company, I needed to complete the apprenticeship alongside my job due to the conditions of my role.

Q) What does a typical day look like for you?

I go to locations across the warehouse, pick the items, and take them to door 8/9 so the marshal can send them off in accordance with deadlines.

Q) What advice would you give to someone starting an apprenticeship?

Don’t stress about it. Whether it’s part of your job or not, all you need to do is gather the information and stay on top of work.

Q) How did your manager and trainer support you throughout the programme?

My manager was really supportive and always available when I needed help. I even had time set aside to complete work during night shifts. My trainer was also brilliant in helping me get back on track after switching providers.

Q) What made you want to work in warehousing?

I enjoy hands-on work, and warehousing keeps me busy. My dad works at Vantec as an Operations Manager and mentioned a role coming up, it sounded like a great opportunity and I’m glad I took it.

Q) What was your work experience before joining Vantec?

I didn’t have any previous work experience. Before this, I was at college doing construction, which I wasn’t enjoying, which is one of the factors that led me to this apprenticeship.

Q) Was it overwhelming starting out as a new apprentice?

Yes, the hardest part was getting used to a working environment and making a good first impression. But Penshaw View were really supportive. My trainer made the sessions interactive and enjoyable, which helped a lot.

Q) What was the most enjoyable part of your apprenticeship?

I liked learning about how warehousing works, especially when it comes to supply chains and health and safety. It helped me understand the bigger picture.

Q) How has the apprenticeship helped your future aspirations?

It’s given me more confidence and helped me stand out to the bosses at Vantec. I plan to stay here and work towards getting my next forklift licence so I can operate racks at height. Eventually, I’d like to move on to a Level 3 apprenticeship.

Q) Any final advice for other apprentices?

Use the time your employer gives you to stay on track with your work. Even if you have setbacks, like I did with my provider closing, it’s possible to succeed with the right support.

Through our collaboration with Vantec and the North East Automotive Alliance, we were able to provide the continuity and guidance Dylan needed to thrive.

Here’s what the people involved in his apprenticeship journey had to say:

Our trainer, said:

“Dylan was a pleasure to work with. He showed great resilience to the situation he was left in and the transfer of programme. We look forward to seeing him develop further and maybe end up on one of our Level 3 Warehouse Supervisor apprenticeships in the future.”

Martin Best, Shift Manager at Vantec said:

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Penshaw View for their support and training throughout Dylan’s apprenticeship in Supply Chain Warehouse Operative Level 2. Dylan has shown great commitment and focus from the start of his programme through to successful completion.

“Throughout his time on the course, Dylan demonstrated a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a strong work ethic. He was consistently engaged with both the practical and theoretical aspects of the role and has developed into a reliable and capable operator. His attention to detail, ability to follow processes, and teamwork have all contributed positively to our operation.”

Ashleigh Davison, Quality & Training Coordinator at Vantec, said:

“Working with Penshaw View has been a highly positive experience. Their professionalism, clear communication, and dedication to supporting our Apprentice were instrumental in achieving a successful outcome. We’ve seen real growth and development, and we’d be happy to work with them again in the future.”
